Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2024: Memories that make us - Ayobami Ogungbe

Capetown International Convention Centre, 16 - 18 February 2024
Booth G1

Following his debut solo ‘Home’, in which Ogungbe highlights familial spaces and bodies that were instrumental to the forging of his personal Identity, Ogungbe delves deeper into specific events in his childhood that had a huge impact on who he has become as an adult and how he also views the world. In revisiting such canon events, he re-examines himself and come to terms at least in part, that he may still be a child at heart. These events define him so clearly that he would not be who he is if they did not happen . Featuring intricately woven photography prints with jagged edges, obscure figures and landscapes, Ogungbe presents the pieces as he remembers them in is head in a bid to represent the emotions that well up when the memories come to the fore.

By exploring varying architectural textures, landscapes and forms, Ogungbe moves mostly around exterior scenes, by still scrutinizing the relationship between other bodies and landscapes, the pieces encourage reflection on the ways certain events no matter how mundane shape our sense of self and our connections to others.
