On the 11th of December, The Rele Arts Foundatiom hosted the first edition of The Art Salon with an exhibition titled ‘Beyond Oil’ by mixed media artist – Chamberlin Ukenedo. Beyond Oil, is a 13 piece collection that explores the artist's fears and hopes for Nigeria following the recent oil price drop. Each piece is crafted in a four step process which begins with a digitally created pattern printed on canvas. These images are then enhanced with acrylic to bring out the contrast and create an optical illusion. To finish it off, the artist applies objects like buttons and glitter on the work.
According to the artist, "Beyond Oil is, therefore, a provocation that lubricates our other potentials and sets both the medium and the message in motion. As such, it activates the link on the one hand between traditional and new media with little or no oil and, on the other hand, a Nigeria stuck in a creaking state of existence. Diversification is therefore the unspoken word that lifts my socio-political being beyond oil; it marks a paradigmatic shift in creativity for sustenance [or survival] in the wake of the dwindling value of oil."
During the opening, the 1st floor of the gallery was transformed as people considered and contemplated the pieces. The action was centered around the installation called ‘Diversify or Die’. Attendees were in a contemplative mood and they steeped in the message the artist was trying to express with his work. The exhibition is open till the 24th of December.
